ALL ARE WELCOME
No matter what your age or level of
physical fitness or area of interest, you will benefit in many ways from a regular yoga practice. Whether you have
a need to improve your flexability and strength, to learn how to take control of stress in your life, to learn how
to relax, to learn meditation or you might have an interest in yogic history and philosophy...
PREPARATION
To get the most from a yoga session
you will need to be comfortable in class, therefore it is best to practice on an empty stomach so
it is a good idea to have a light snack a couple of hours before coming to class. Also an empty bladder and bowels are recomended
for comfort during practice.
Purchase of a sticky yoga mat is also
recomended for use in class and for home practice, which is essential as it is non-slip and provides a warm barrier between
the body and the floor. Some venues provide mats for use in class, but it is a good idea to obtain a mat for homework which
will be given during a ten-week course. A foam block can also be useful for sitting or for use during posture work if necessay.
If you have difficulty obtaining these, just ask.
A blanket to be used for relaxation
can be useful to prevent distraction from any possible draughts.
Wear loose comfortable clothing which
will not restrict your movement or breathing - no tight waistbands.
PRACTICING SAFELY
If you have any major health problems
(for example, heart conditions & high blood pressure; hernia; asthma/bronchitis; chronic backpain and arthritis) which
may affect your ability to practice yoga you must inform me of these at your first session so that I can advise you on suitable
modifications - but if in doubt please consult your doctor. Pregnancy brings its own set of cautions, so please ask for advice
and again consult your doctor.
An important point to remember at all
times is to practice within your physical limits or comfort zone - but you also have to listen to, respect, and trust
your body - if something doesn't feel right - don't do it. If in doubt ask for advice, especially if you are struggling.
Remember yoga should be fun - it is
as much about the journey, as it is about arriving.
